THE BOAT IN THE BAY

A boat came into the bay,

seeking refuge from the coming storm.

She watched from the safe shore,

as the clouds built, and the wind

whipped her hair around her head.

She wondered then,

just how bad could it be,

out on those high seas,

with the waves crashing

and the troughs opening like chasms,

to suck a sailor down?

Would the highs of ocean life be worth it,

the freedom, the adventure,

the right to roam in any direction,

to stop in any far-flung land?

Would the highs be higher than the lows,

or would the uncertainty and fear

and the cold misery of a long dark night

on a stormy ocean, be lower than the highs?

It was a question with no answer,

a supposition, and uncertainty

grew fear in her mind, and roots

grew out from her land-lubber feet,

like trees clinging to the soil.

The storm passed, as all storms do,

and the boat sailed out of the bay.

While she remained on the shore,

anchored, but rooted and sure.
