Roisin Duffy

sings a melody,

muted by bars,

dulled by doors,

by the confines

of a cloistered cage.

A very different song

would he sing,

in freedom.

His warbled voice

would soar

to the open sky,

if only that sky were

within his reach,

and not a false dream,

of impossibility.

I should open the door,

my songbird,

and let you soar.

But no. For I have

no guarantee

that you would ever

come back,

that you would leave

that wide bright sky,

for me.

And I would miss

your song too much.
