HOW NOW BROWN COW

How now, my wee brown cow,

says farmer,

with his hand resting affectionately

on her shaggy head.

Have you food enough to eat,

and space enough to sleep?

Are you happy in your field,

warm in your barn,

content in your skin?

Is the grass you graze green enough,

are your pastures all you need,

all you have to do,

you know,

is tell me how you feel.

But, as the wee brown cow

was a cow,

and therefore couldn’t speak,

all she did was chew her cud

and ruminate in peace.

While the farmer went on wondering

how was the brown cow, now.

I guess we’ll never know.
