two separate organs

pulsing in our chests,

just a medical and scientific part.

and genetics required

to keep it beating so, but it's a thing,

a life preserving body part, no more.

But together, when we love another,

our hearts pulse with purpose,

and become a channel

for all the feelings that we have.

Our emotions are held

in those beating hearts

that double as a place to store

our deep reserves of love.

Connection turns a pump for blood

into a wonderful receptacle

of sacrifice and giving,

and support and deep compassion,

and turns those tiny chambers

into a cavernous capacity

to fill with all our deepest feelings,

and to hold our everlasting love.
