CHASM

There is a chasm

in our midst

and we peer

blinkered

over it

instead of at each other,

lest we claw

those old wounds open.

Your side

my side

the middle ground

the higher ground,

an abyss.

The past made cracks,

wide fissures

and invisible slits

that either one of us

could fall through

and slide all the way down,

to hell.

There is a bridge

behind us

linking both,

flimsy, but maybe

firm enough

to hold.

We are so busy

watching the ground

for pitfalls

that we never notice it.

And so we stay

firmly planted

on our own

isolated island,

and never cross

the wide divide.
