BIRD WATCHING

Granny watched the birds

above on the branch,

and said to her cat Jess,

oh wow, look at those birds

with their glossy feathers

and shiny beaks and inquisitive eyes,

aren't they splendid?

Jess thought, hmm, yes,

splendid indeed

and plump and succulent too,

I'd have one of those.

But didn't say it, being a mute cat,

and because Granny wouldn't approve.

Granny doesn't like her cat

to catch helpless creatures,

birds or rabbits or mice.

So Jess just looked

with pricked-up ears,

and pretended

to be bird-watching too.
