BEARINGS

I need to get my bearings

in a world turning faster

on an axis tilting quicker

than it ever has, I feel.

I think my compass must be broken.

I tap the glass and the needle turns,

but not in a direction that I want.

Gravity has stretched, I fear,

my feet no longer anchor to the ground

like they did, I'm pulled along.

I want to go back,

but time only travels one direction

and so I move along.

There's another rise in the road up ahead.

Perhaps if I climb its crest and look beyond,

this time will be different.

Perhaps there'll be a view I recognise,

and I can settle back to earth

having found my bearings,

knowing where I stand.
