ABOVE THE RIVER

I built my house too close to the drop

high above the river

and now when I step outside

I never know if I'll tumble down

and get washed out to sea.

I could have built it further back

nestled in the trees

but then I wouldn't have been able

to watch the river every day

and feel its pulsing rhythm.

If you asked me now to choose again

I'd still go for the option

that gives me access to the beauty

of the savage rushing river

and I'd still live with the danger.
